The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently arrested several manufacturers of counterfeit drugs,food and other products,even as it has warned Nigerian consumers to be wary of pass-off food and drinks sold in the markets across the country.
The acting Director General of NAFDAC Mrs Yetunde Oluremi Oni who sent out this message Thursday said that the dangers inherent in the consumption of these fake food products should be apparent to all and sundry as it is the cause of a lot of medical ailments in Nigeria etc.
Mrs Oni who was represented at the press briefing by the trio of Barrister Kingsley Ejiofor,Director Investigation and Enforcement,Dr.Abubakar Jimoh,Director Special Duties and Deputy Director(FSAN)Mrs Onabanjo Simidele etc stressed NAFDAC’s support of SME’s and federal government’s policy on ease of doing business but said that does not mean it supports the flagrant counterfeiting of products of established brands.
She therefore urge SME’s in the country to clean up their acts in their own interest,saying that the agency will continually work to arrest the activities of dubious business operators who use fake NAFDAC registration numbers and others who are involved in the production of pass-off products to the detriment of the health of fellow Nigerians.
According to her the agency is currently investigating unauthorised production of LAMHJIB herbal medicine and forgery by Nura Ayuba,Yahaya Tanimu,Abubakar Ibrahim a.ka. Lamido and Idris Adamu(prime suspect) with fake NAFDAC number,saying that the culprits involved in the crime are based not only in Lagos but involved individuals domiciled in sokoto ,kaduna and Lagos state.
Investigations,as she posited ,are on-going in the case of illegal distribution and sales of suspected counterfeit “read-a-dream insecticides and hair relaxers at Edo and Delta states.She said her operators have nabbed some of the culprits and raided stores and home where the fake products were being sold and manufactured.
For her the worst case was the on-going investigation of illegal production ,distribution and sales of counterfeit Tasty Time Glucozeaid Energy drink,a pass-off of Lucozade Energy drink with fake NEN :01-2474L by Mr Kole Isaac O.,the Managing Director of Tasty Time Nigerian Limited,located at No.1,Kole Street,Olude B/stop,Ipaja,Lagos.
As she said NAFDAC enforcement team raided the company and on arrival “the offending product with seventeen(17)other unregistered products were see in the company’s warehouse and factory.The Managing Director could not produce evidence of registration of any of the products with NAFDAC”The MD has been arrested.
