African farmers on the farm


The Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode has concluded plans to declare xmas rice bonanza for Lagosian at N13, 000, ($35) per bag.His Special Adviser on food security Hon. Ganiyu Okanlawo who disclosed this at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (LCU) Stakeholders Summit held  recently at its hall in Abiola Gardens, Alausa, Ikeja said the State government is subsidizing the rice.

The event graced by the President of LCC I, Chief (Mrs.) Nike Akande who was ablely represented by Deputy President Paul Babatunde Kowasi, Barrister Celestine Nwankwo, 2nd Vice Chairman LCCI Agric & Agro-allied Group/President LCCI cooperative society, Otumba Femi Oke, Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) etc.

He said the rice was made possible by Lagos State Collaboration efforts with Kebbi State, saying that the Lagos also plans to set up a Commodity Exchange Market in order to boost the food sector in the State and help farmers.

He said the State would be setting up on Agricultural Trust Fund in order to ameliorate the challenges faced by farmers in the state.

Barrister Nwankwo said the summit aim to find ways  agriculture could be boosted in the state and Nigeria stating that the recessive period Nigeria face mandates it must change its Mono-Economic situation.

The Deputy President of LCCI in his contribution said for Nigeria to boost its productive capacity that a return to agriculture is a must.He said that the return of rail transport would enable the easy distribution of Agricultural products.

Dr. Olawale Mersh, Anita Okwuribido and Otumba Oke all opined that innovativeness and creativity will be needed for the country to return to enviable heights in the field of agriculture, maintaining that the nation should focus on the production of secondary agricultural products in order to earn real value from its agric potentials.
