The Head of Political Science, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, professor Sat Obiyan has warned the nation that the Muhammadu Buhari led federal government is becoming draconian.
Obiyan who was speaking at the Centre for constitutionalism and Demilitarization (CCD) Annual Democracy Lecture and Book Presentation held in Lagos recently urged the government to resend its anti-democratic policies in the overall interest of the Nigerian Nation.
The lecture entitled “Nigeria’s Democracy Under the Muhammadu Buhari Administration; Democratic progress or descent into Authoritarianism” witnessed the presence of top pro-democracy campaigners.
The event witnessed the presentation of the book. “The Case of a Nursing Father” by the founder of CCD, Dr. Sylvester Odion Akhaine. The book was reviewed by Prof. Amen U. of the University of Abuja.
Dr Akhane called for the deepening of democracy in Nigeria and wondered why many pro-democracy elements that gained power always turn coat apart from a few individuals.
He stated his strong belief on the rule of law, saying that is the only credible foundation of a true democracy.
Prof. Obiyan had warned the nation that the anti-corruption crusade being waged in the nation cannot succeed without recourse to the rule of law and maintenance of the checks and balance between the three arms of government. He said that none should override the other.
